Hi Debra, An organization called Challenge Day (www.challengeday.org) has been conducting 1 day experiential learning programs for 12 thru 18 year old students in school settings for the last 20+ years. It's all about getting kids and adults to re...

Over the years, our volunteers range from early 20s to retirees. We're located in the near North part of the Chicago downtown area, yet we've had volunteers come from the North and West suburbs on a weekly basis. I think the best recruitment tool ...

A great resource is www.mentorig.org - the National Mentoring Partnership website. Anyone can plug in their zip code in the top left corner field and it will list all the mentoring opportunities near them. Contact info for each organization is pro...

I'm just starting to hear about some online resources to check website demographics. For example - Quantcast.com is a way to check the demographics of any website for free! I just need to identify WHICH websites are the ones where my target audien...

Paula, I know here in Central Florida the Business and Professional Women's club focuses on mentoring as an outreach project and a number of their members are mentors. The age group of these women is probably heavily in their 40's and 50's. Can't ...

I wrote a book to attract busy women to mentor girls because I belong to that group and am passionate about mentoring and how critical it is to the next generation. I wrote the book much like the premise from the movie 'Field of Dreams' - 'If you ...

This is a group aimed to help leaders and supporters of volunteer-based youth mentoring programs meet, network and share ideas.

One of the roles I think mentors take on when the mentee is a teenager is 'job cheerleader'. My mentee was very interested in working from about age 12 on. She did a lot of babysitting, but really wanted to prove herself to the ('real') employment...

I just heard from a mentoring org friend in Fort Myers who listened to a speaker at Rotary. His name was Dr. Michael Domino who wrote a workbook called 'Mentoring on the go!' to help mentor high school and college age students. I haven't tracked d...

Thank you Paula. I know this discussion began with your question about finding ways to recruit more men into mentoring roles. We have several men in this forum who are mentors and are working with youth or organizing youth organizations that mento...

In my 8 years as a mentor, the first 3 were with a mentoring organization. At the start, they were only looking for a one year commitment. We stayed connected to them during years 2 & 3 because there were about 2 get togethers per year and Chelsea...

Paula, On the one hand I can see the value of having the blessing and training of a known mentoring organization, but I also think it's important for people to know that an individual doesn't have to be a part of one to be step out and become a me...

Dan, Thanks for your input! I agree, word-of-mouth 'marketing' is a powerful way to attract new volunteers. There's no better believer than the person with firsthand experience. I made a presentation this morning to an Optimist Club and introduce...

Introduction

Hi! My name is Paula and I'm all about supporting and growing the youth mentoring movement. Over the last 30 years I've worked in junior high schools as a teacher and coach, worked at the YMCA as the Youth and Aquatic program Director as well as the teen Leaders Club advisor. I got involved in community-based mentoring 8 years ago and have been meeting on a weekly basis with my mentee Chelsea ever since! (she is 19 now.) About 5 years ago I got involved in faith-based mentoring at my local Unity church and worked with 12-18 year old teens in two different programs. I also am a 'serial' volunteer at local Challenge Day programs (excellent program - challengeday.org) and have also been a coach/mentor in a Teen Leadership program at a local high school.

About 2 years ago my mentee, Chelsea and I decided to write a book (MENTORrific Women! Taking a Girl Under Your Wing) about our mentoring experience and to help busy women move past 'I've been thinkin' about being a mentor' to actually taking action! The book just came out in Dec 2008 and is available on my website www.MENTORrificWomen.com . A second book - MENTORrific Success Stories: Inspiring Stories from Youth Mentors & Mentees - is also available on the same website as a special offer.

I am speaking to a variety groups about mentoring and our books and am truly enjoying the work! As Chelsea's work/school schedule permits, she will also be joining me 'on the road'.
