Act On Those Urges to Give!

Two months ago, Lee Owen (our communications strategist for the NICENetwork) said to me that something that a woman mentioned in a meeting recently kept nagging at her. It was a topic we don't contemplate much in Florida, the land of hot summers and palm trees. The woman witnessed, here in January, kids out waiting for the school bus without jackets. Believe it or not, in Central Florida it can get to be as low as 30 degrees in the early morning during the "winter" and not warm up above 50 some… Continue

NICE Vision ... the plan whose time has come

People have been asking me what my vision for NICE is, so here goes (hang with me, it's pretty painless ...)

Problem Statement: The growth in the large volume of start-up human service nonprofits each year in the United States poses three challenges to the industry which are not being addressed effectively:

1. The success stories of human service nonprofits created by U.S. social and civic entrepreneurs are not typically known outside a given non-profit’s city or region. Few research in… Continue

Second Life for Nonprofit solutions

I just read in a past edition of the Philanthropy Journal where the MacAarthur Foundation has opened an "island" in the virtual world of Second Life to educate charities and foundations about the potential for growing philanthropy in the virtual world and to allow its grantees to showcase their work and connect with new audiences.

What a great idea for other organizations and human service initiatives. Go view: http://www.macfound.org/virtualworld.
I'm going to look into this idea for the NICEN… Continue

Twitter tweets and how to spend your time

Stuck in an airport last week and always trying to make time count, I'm now about two-thirds of the way through "Twitter Power: How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet and a Time". I'd be curious whether anyone else has read it and successfully incorporated Joel Comm's ideas. He really knows his "tweating" strategies, but I'm wondering if it's worth all the investment of time and interruption he suggests necessary to make it work. Should one be so tied to one's Blackberry? Time is money after all.… Continue

Changes, graduation, your story

I'm waxing philosophical today since my daughter is graduating from college on Saturday in Illinois. It's so amazing to see how people's stories unfold. At 24, after five years of challenging study in French horn, our daughter has made it through doubt and a host of other issues to success. In the fall she'll attend Boston U grad school with a very bright performance future ahead of her in a great environment for music. But six months ago, life wasn't so clear.

We all have roller coaster experi… Continue

Thanks Louise for the sweet comment. And, yes, you are in a similar situation as Jerry. Have you thought any more about having a Banks Day in Nov. (not volunteering by the way:-) but I was thinking promoting and setting up "a dig" this year would be novel and could be the big event if you find someone to help now. You already have the plot scoped out.

Hi Debra:
I somewhat connect with Jerry Rudoff. I feel I am in a similar category except with the Eustis Historical Museum which is manned by the Eustis Historical Museum and Preservation Society, Inc. Funding is paramount for us. You are such a talent and I wish I were more like you. Time also is an element that flies by and definitely does not stand still. Sincerely, Louise

Always use a video of you. You can upload it to youtube and then embed the code in the video squeeze page.

Hi Debra,
Great to hear from you. My recommendation on the sales pages is to use a video squeeze page. Daniel Nickerson [linkman11@gmail.com] has lots of experience in video squeeze pages. He just offered some video squeeze page templates. I would recommend him. If he cannot do it, he would know who would. He is the technical person for Joel Comm. If you need more help, let me know. I will add a new segment in the near future about how important heroes will be with their heroic attitudes to help save humanity from the projected end of the world hysteria in 2012.
take care,
ralph

I'm glad to join. As you know, I served on the county of Los Angeles' mentoring work group. The work group was dropped a while back due to lack of funding and it wasn't terribly successful other than we learned a lot of lessons. I'll be happy to share what was learned.

Hello Everyone... it certainly is a pleasure for me to communicate with such a distinguished group. My background over the last 3 plus decades has been in law enforcement with particular interests in the area of community policing and youth-led crime prevention. We can talk more about related topics later if desired. Over the years, I have also been interested in mentoring and with my background in dealing with youth and my experience in dealing with online communications, I'd like to direct your attention to a concept we subscribe to called Peer to Peer Mentoring. I realized many years ago that although most adults are good intentioned and talk about mentoring and its benefits action is usually slow in coming and for a varity of reasons... Being in law enforcement and having contact with numerous young Black males, I definately saw a need for mentoring and espcially a need for Black adult professional memtors.. One of the problems that becomes evident right away is the fact that many professions, be they Black or White or whatever, are working to improve their own lot and when they come home at the end of the day, they are busy mentoring their own children and families. In part and as a result, we developed the idea of using youth to mentor other youth and trust me in some cases I've seen some really special youth mentor adult and in particular their own parents.... It is a unique perspecitve and does require specific training and a set of rules. I've also had the pleasure of mentoring line and if time and interests permits would be pleased to discuss this aspect at some point... I can go on typing here but I'd better bring my first input to a close and give you all an opportunity to jump on... thx..jerry

Hi Debra,

Thank you for such a warm welcome. I found this site thank to Dan F. Bassill, who has been my "virtual mentor" for two years now. I am into mentoring too but still have a lot to learn and I am hoping that as we share ideas and experiences on a site like this, our horizons, mine especially, would expand and thus create greater impact. I'm looking forward to participating actively. Cheers.
